Trimming the tree

We put our tree up about three weeks ago. We bought it this year instead of cutting it down. Since A&E were born we haven't really had time for hiking into the woods and dragging our tree back with kids in tow. Maybe next year! I was so happy we bought it early this year instead of waiting for the second or third weekend in the month. We enjoyed a few evenings putting up the lights and hanging the ornaments. That was fun and hard work for Aidan and Ella not to carry off the ornaments or man handle the tree.

The first Christmas I remember was when we were living in Africa. I was 4 or 5 at the time and I was so excited about giving my gifts to my parents. I remember my father saying we would cut down a tree (who knew pine trees grow in Africa)and that value - of a freshly cut tree - has stayed with me ever since. It was cold, not a Chicago winter, but cold and gray that Christmas and the idea of going outside didn't appeal to me. I remember the warm beautiful glow of the Christmas lights as I gazed into the tree once it was up.

The magical charm of Christmas lights on a tree is the same no matter what continent you live on. I'm thinking of my friends all over the globe tonight. And I also wonder if Aidan and Ella will remember THIS Christmas and if so what will their memories be?
