Dan turned in his grant Thursday afternoon (Yay Dan!) and the following Saturday morning we were ready as planned. We had scoped out a waterfront house via the internet, had the car inspected, packed our bags and bought the Thule rack for the extra baby gear. Team L was on the move. We were looking forward to a relaxing weekend in a little village on the Eastern shore of Maryland called St. Michaels. Maryuleth would be in Virginia beach for an "aupair meeting" so, she didn't come along for this adventure. The place turned out to be a lovely property and the town of St. Michaels is charming. We had nice weather and Cooper loved swimming in the bay. I think the only thing we didn't plan on was what it's like to be on a vacation with two 5 month old babies.
Maybe its because we think of Aidan and Ella as little people; they can't talk but they can communicate with lots of personality! Maybe it's because it's only been 5 months. We had it in our head that it would be just like it was before the babies were born - except we'd have the babies with us - still, we'd relax, put our feet up, bring a book, sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast, read the paper, or maybe go for a jog. We brought our running clothes. But we were deluded! :)
There are likely more experienced parents out there that can pull this off... but, Aidan and Ella definitely didn't want to sleep in. They don't read the paper or prop their feet up. They didn't want to hang out in their play area sipping on milk while we ate a leisurely breakfast sipping on a cup of hot joe; no no no. They want to go go go! And so we did! We played on the living room floor, we walked around the town, we walked down a country lane and along the shore, we watched Cooper swim in the Chesapeake Bay.
We got in a few bubble baths, and some late night movie watching. We all slept in the same king sized bed with Cooper close by (my favorite memory) and we enjoyed the sunrise over the bay. We rambled around the old farm house listening to Count Bassie and playing in the grass. We went into town and had a cocktail at a dog friendly dock side bar and grill; the bartender took a shine to Cooper and gave him as many milkbones and as much water as he could handle. But we did not sleep in, nor linger over our breakfast, our books nor the paper, or go for a jog. The last day we were there it rained and as nice as it was we were glad to come home where we could relax and lay down our heads. Aaaahhh....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Kyly...when you were that age most Sunday mornings I would put you in a baby carrier
ReplyDeleteon my back and we would hike up onto a high sand dune at Indiana Dunes State Park next door to our beach house and we would make a fire and cook pancakes, bacon and coffee and look out over Lake Michigan and read the Sunday
paper. Picnics and hikes are great at that age.
